How to Become More Motivated

What do you think when you hear the term: motivation? Many think of losing weight, turning in a school assignment, or completing a task for work. We all need motivation in our lives, no matter if we need it for school, work, or our personal goals. Motivation pushes us to be better, and it helps us grow. Understanding what motivation is and why we need it can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful person.

What is Motivation?

Motivation is the feeling that encourages you to act on your goals and desires. When you have motivation, you are more likely to follow through with an idea or behavior. Positive Psychology describes motivation as a want for change. This want for change can include behavior, thinking, the world, your life, and the list goes on.

Motivation can be found everywhere around us. Sometimes we are motivated by a goal, and other times we can be motivated by a biological function. For example, someone may be inspired by a deadline or motivated to use the restroom!

How Can You Become More Motivated?

Start With Your Goals

To create your own motivation, you must have something to work towards. Start by setting a goal. Goals do not have to be grand and luxurious. More times than not, goals work better when they are small and manageable. Begin by writing down your “big picture” goal and then break that down into smaller, more attainable goals. For illustration, if your goal is to spend less money on eating out, schedule days to cook and grocery shop. Your goal will feel much more achievable when you have stepping stones to get you there. Each time you accomplish a small goal, it will motivate you to accomplish the next!

Create a Task and Reward System

In today’s society, instant gratification is common. Because we have all grown accustomed to it, consider using it for your advantage. For each task or goal you wish to reach, plan a reward. Rewards do not have to be expensive or elaborate. For example, if your task for the day is to write five thousand words, create a prize for writing each one thousand word section. Your reward may be taking a walk around the block, buying a cup of coffee, calling a friend, or watching television. Your rewards will help motivate you and encourage you to accomplish your goals.

Find Your Support System

Sometimes the only thing you need to feel productive and motivated is to find someone who motivates you! Surround yourself with positive people who love you and want the best for you. If you have people in your life that want to see you succeed, you are more likely to succeed. A support system can be one person or multiple people. Your support could be a spouse, friend, therapist, counselor, group, coworker, etc. Let your person know what your goals are. They can help hold you accountable and motivate you to achieve your goal!
